The Fastfind Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) features the same advanced technology as found in the award winning Rescue 406 EPIRB. Designed using miniaturised components to fit into an ergonomically styled compact casing, the PLB employs a simple three-stage manual operation and features user-replaceable battery packs, which are available for use in temperatures of -20 and -40 degrees C
Carrying the Fastfind could not be simpler, as it is supplied with a lanyard and carry case to enable the user to keep the PLB safely attached at all times.
The 406 MHz frequency provides an alert to the rescue services within 90 minutes, depending on satellite passes, and gives a positional accuracy to within 5km (3nm). Once in the vicinity, the 121.5 MHz transmitter is more than sufficient to enable rescue services to find a vessel or individual in distress, particularly if equipped with distress flares and/or a lifejacket light.
These latest advanced products from McMurdo have been designed to provide recreational boaters, professional and semi-professional crew, delivery yachtsmen and fishermen with the very best chance of being found without delay at sea in an emergency.
More recently, private pilots have been utilising the Fastfind, and it's GPS equipped brother, the Fastfind Plus, as a "Voluntary Fit PLB". Land-use of PLB is being allowed in more countries throughout the world, but we must stress that using a PLB on land in the UK is currently illegal, as there are no agencies set-up to deal with this type of distress alert. We are hopeful that this will be changed soon, but be warned, a hefty fine will come your way!
Like the EPIRBs, the features of your PLB will be optimised if you take a few minutes to complete the registration form and send it to the EPIRB Registry, based in Falmouth, Cornwall.
